Light Language Energy Healing: What It Actually Is (And What It Isn't)

Quick summary: Light language energy healing is a spiritual healing practice where sound or unstructured spoken language moves through a practitioner during a session. It isn't a channeled message from an outside source, but a gift used the same way another healer might use touch or toning. It shares roots with the older, documented practice of glossolalia (speaking in tongues), which has a long, cross-cultural history tied to healing. In session, it functions as a two-way conversation between energies rather than a one-directional transmission.

A woman is shown speaking light language energy healing, colors and shapes float around her.

There's a specific reaction I get when I tell someone I practice spoken light language. Usually, it's one of two things, a quizzical look or a flicker of recognition. For the latter, people tend to picture one of a few things: someone scribbling unknown characters, or channeled artwork made in a trance state. Sometimes it's a spoken message delivered from a guide or star being. All of those are valid forms of light language. From what I've seen, though, people use them for messages and transmissions, not for energy healing.

For me, light language energy healing isn't a transmission from somewhere else. It's a gift from spirit that I use, the same way another practitioner might use their gifts of healing touch, sound healing, or their voice for toning. It came about in a very natural way, and I know it's part of what my soul has experienced across multiple lifetimes. But it needed the deep personal work of tending to what needed healing in me before it could fully emerge.

I want to walk you through what this actually is, where it comes from historically, what it feels like from the perspective of someone who carries this gift, and how to know if a practitioner is safe to work with.

What Light Language Energy Healing Actually Is

Light language gets lumped in with a lot of things it isn't. Psychics use the term, mediums use it. So do people who channel messages from spirit guides or star beings, and that's all valid for what it is, it just isn't what I do.

For me, light language is a healing tool, plain and simple. I'm not receiving a message and relaying it. I'm not stepping aside so something else can speak through me. I'm using a gift my soul carries, the same way I'd use my hands to move stagnant energy, or my intuition to sense where someone's holding tension they haven't named yet.

How This Gift Developed For Me

I'd spent years doing my own healing work, most of it centered on my throat, having a voice, using it, being heard without shrinking, releasing the fear of judgment that comes with taking up space. Several years into that work, sound started showing up in my sessions on its own.

Have you ever felt a sneeze coming and known it's easier to just let it out than fight it? That's what this was like. Energy building, needing somewhere to go.

For close to a year, I was a little embarrassed by it. I'd warn clients ahead of time. Hey, I do this thing, don't be alarmed. I was bringing them along with me while I figured out what it even was.

I didn't have a name for it until I attended my healing school's annual retreat, when a few colleagues mentioned, almost in passing, that I was practicing light language. I'd never heard the term before that day. When I went looking for what it meant, most of what I found didn't quite match my experience. A lot of practitioners use it for channeled transmissions rather than hands-on healing. The way I experience this gift is different. It feels natural, rooted in the earth and my ancestors, but with an element of the cosmos in it too, like something passed down through my star family as well.

Light Language Isn't New. It's Called Glossolalia

Here's something I didn't expect to find when I started digging into this: light language has a much older name, and a much longer history than the term itself suggests.

There's an actual word for this: glossolalia, from the Greek for tongue and speech. Researchers and religious scholars have used this term for over a century, and the practice goes back a lot further than that.

The Apostle Paul wrote about it in his letters to the early church at Corinth. The medieval mystic Hildegard von Bingen described visions and an unknown sacred language she believed moved through her. She was also known for her medicinal and herbal writing, which I find fascinating. Come the early 1900s, the Azusa Street Revival became a turning point. It was a Pentecostal Christian movement that believed the Holy Spirit could still move through people in the form of healing and tongues. There, prophecy, tongues, and reports of physical healing showed up together, not as separate events but as one experience. Healing ministers of that era, Smith Wigglesworth and John G. Lake among them, built entire ministries around the two side by side.

It shows up outside of Christianity too. Researchers have documented similar unstructured, spirit-led speech in shamanic and spiritual traditions around the world.

Is light language the same thing as glossolalia? I believe it is, just with a newer name. When something has a lineage this long, this cross-cultural, and this consistently tied to healing, it's hard for me to see it as anything else. That said, I'd encourage you to use your own discernment and come to your own conclusion here too.

What It Feels Like: A Two-Way Conversation

When this gift first started emerging for me, there was a clear line between thinking and speaking. That is, I'd have to consciously drop into it, and it required a certain amount of effort. Today, that line is nonexistent. This gift is part of me in a way that feels very natural.

It's a lot like learning to drive, at first you're tracking everything, the mirror, the distance to the car ahead, your signal. Eventually it becomes part of how you move, and you stop having to think about it at all.

Some light language sounds one-directional, like someone reading to you from a book, or telling you a story from start to finish. There's no sense of exchange in it. That's not what this is, at least not from where I sit as the practitioner.

When I speak light language in a session, it's a conversation. Not something that feels conversational, it is one, happening between my guide and my client's guide, or higher self to higher self. I can feel the vibrational signature shift depending on which conversation is happening, and what needs to move because of it. That back and forth, that mutual participation, is the whole point. It's communion, really. And communion is what energy healing is, underneath everything else. Two energy bodies meeting so something can change.

Where the Light Language Healing Conversation Started

I was working with a guest at a healing retreat, and my teacher asked what I was picking up. I sensed there was energy in this person's field that wasn't theirs, and that it needed to be told to leave. This was new to me at the time, and I remember thinking, how do I even do that? How am I going to tell it to leave?

To do that, I had to switch out of my mind and into my no-mind. That meant tuning in to my higher self and my guides to access this gift, the same shift I described earlier. This was early on, so it took a conscious effort to get there.

Once I'd tapped into that, we (myself, my guides, and my client's guides) grounded the client first. The information came through, along with that familiar feeling of something needing to move through my throat and into speech.

I could understand the intention behind it even without understanding the words. We were grounding and rooting the client, merging with their energy, isolating the energy that didn't belong, and creating a pathway for it to leave. Then we spoke to it directly. It wasn't a gentle "time to go." It was closer to, this door is open, you need to leave, get out. But it was a group effort the whole way through, a conversation between guides working to move that energy out.

If you're curious what spoken light language actually sounds like, I recorded a guided meditation for strengthening your Solar Plexus Chakra that incorporates it near the end.

Using Your Discernment to Choose a Light Language Practitioner

Because this work touches something so personal, who you invite into your energy matters just as much as what modality they practice. I've written more on how to think through that decision in my intro to energy healing post, if you want a deeper look at choosing a practitioner.

I've seen my share of backlash online toward light language. People calling it demonic, dangerous, something to be afraid of. That's a blanket statement, and it isn't a fair one. Painting an entire practice with one broad brush because a few people misuse it is no different than judging an entire religion by its most extreme members.

Use real discernment anyway. Ask for referrals. If your intuition hasn't fully developed yet, or you're still learning to trust it, lean on facts and reputation alongside your gut. And if something feels off, even a little, that's your answer. You don't have to book the session. You don't have to keep watching their content. You get to be particular about who you let into your field. You should be.

Light Language Energy Healing FAQs

A few questions I hear often.

Is light language the same as speaking in tongues?

They're closely related. Speaking in tongues, or glossolalia, is the older, more documented term for unstructured, spirit-led speech, and it shows up across several religious and spiritual traditions. Light language is a newer term that's caught on more in spiritual and healing spaces. Whether they're exactly the same thing probably depends on who you ask, and how they practice it.

Not inherently, no. Like any healing modality, it comes down to the practitioner and their intention. The safest approach is the one you'd use for any energy work: get referrals, trust your discernment, and pay attention to how you actually feel around someone before you commit to a session.

It varies session to session, honestly. Generally I move into an intuitive, receptive state and let sound or language come through as it's needed, often alongside more familiar energy work like grounding or chakra balancing. You don't need to understand the words for it to work. The intention and the vibration are doing the heavy lifting.

Light Language Energy Healing: Next Steps

Light language isn't a performance, and it isn't channeling in the way most people assume. It's a healing tool, one with roots that reach back much further than the term itself. And in my hands, it shows up as a conversation between energies rather than a message from somewhere else.

If this resonated, you might also want to read about chakra balancing sessions or how energy healing supports trauma recovery, both of which connect directly to what I described here. And if you're curious what a session like this would actually feel like for you, book a session and we'll find out together.
