What if there's a deeper purpose? How to see life through a spiritual lens

Updated: May 19

A woman's hand holds a glass sphere with the image of a bridge seen through it.

We've all been there—that moment when something breaks, ends, or unravels, and you’re left wondering, “Why is this happening to me?” It’s an honest question, one that usually rises from pain, fear, or the feeling that life has suddenly gone off script. When you’re in the middle of it, it can seem like the universe is working against you, like you’ve missed a sign or are being punished for something you can’t quite name.

But what if life isn’t punishing you at all? What if it’s inviting you into something deeper?

Over the years, I’ve discovered that one simple shift in perspective can bring immense clarity and peace. Instead of asking, “Why is this happening to me?” I’ve learned to reframe my thoughts to think, “This is happening for me.” It’s a subtle change in language, but a profound change in how we experience our challenges. It doesn’t erase the pain, but it transforms the way we hold it—softening our resistance and opening us to growth, grace, and a deeper trust in the divine.

A simple shift in mindset that changes everything

When we move from life is happening to me into life is happening for me, something begins to soften inside of us. We become open to the idea that even the hard stuff, maybe especially the hard stuff, is part of a divine curriculum. We start to see the sacredness in our struggles.

Holding this perspective allows you to:

  • Build emotional resilience. You move through challenges with more steadiness and less collapse.

  • Stay spiritually open. When we dwell in lower emotions too long, it mutes the messages from our guides and higher self.

  • Accelerate spiritual growth. When you see the lesson, you graduate from it. That’s how evolution works.

  • Hear divine guidance more clearly. Optimism helps you stay tuned to intuition and Spirit.

This teaching is echoed across spiritual traditions. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna teaches Arjuna to surrender the fruits of his actions, to act in alignment with dharma (divine purpose) and release attachment to outcomes. It’s a sacred reminder that life has a higher intelligence, even when we can’t yet see it.

In Christian teachings, Jesus says: "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."(John 16:33). He doesn’t deny that hardship exists. But he reminds us that grace is stronger. That even in suffering, we are not abandoned.

This shift in mindset is not about spiritual bypassing. It’s about choosing trust over fear, and expansion over contraction.

What gets in the way of the shift?

Shifting from life is happening to me to life is happening for me isn’t always easy, and it’s not because you’re doing something wrong. It’s often because there are internal or energetic blocks that cloud your ability to see clearly. So why don’t we always see things this way?

There are a few common reasons:

Victim Mindset

When we’re stuck in victim consciousness, everything feels like it’s out to get us—people, circumstances, even God. It’s easy to fall into the habit of identifying with pain or powerlessness—especially when life keeps handing us the hard stuff.

Lack of Self-Compassion

If your friend were going through something hard, you’d hold space for them with compassion and perspective. But we often don’t offer ourselves the same grace. Self-compassion opens the door to see our situation differently.

Habitual Thinking

We’re wired to repeat thought loops, especially the ones we’ve practiced the most. If we’ve spent years seeing life as against us, it takes conscious effort to rewire that story.

Spiritual Disconnection

From a spiritual perspective, one of the most impactful blocks is a lack of connection with the divine. This often shows up as an imbalance or block in the crown chakra (Sahasrara), which governs our sense of unity with higher power, purpose, and truth.

Signs of a blocked crown chakra.

When the crown chakra is blocked, life can feel confusing or spiritually silent. You might notice things like:

  • Feeling spiritually disconnected or adrift

  • Difficulty trusting there’s a plan

  • Lack of guidance or clarity

  • Feelings of insignificance, aimlessness, or loneliness

The good news? When we bring awareness and healing to this space, it restores our ability to see life from a soul level.

How to practice the shift in everyday life

Shifting your mindset isn’t about denying your experience, it’s about staying open within it. These small practices can help make that shift feel more accessible, even in the middle of chaos. This is a lifelong practice, but here are a few ways to begin:

  • Name what’s hard, then ask a higher question. After you vent or cry or rage, gently ask: "What might this be here to teach me?"

  • Use spiritual journaling. Try writing from the perspective of your highest self: "What would she see that I don’t yet?"

  • Check in with your crown chakra. Visualize light pouring in through the top of your head, clearing blocks and restoring clarity.

  • Practice surrender as a strength. You don’t have to figure it all out. You just have to stay open to what Spirit is showing you.

Your Spiritual Homework

Sometimes a mindset shift needs a mirror. Let this be yours.

Journal Prompts:

  1. What area of my life currently feels like it’s "happening to me"?

  2. What story am I telling myself about this situation?

  3. If I trusted this was happening for me, how would I respond differently?

Take your time with these. Honesty is more important than perfection.

Ready for a bigger transformation?

You don’t have to figure this out alone. If you're feeling stuck in your story, or disconnected from your faith and inner knowing, this may be a sign it’s time to go deeper.

In a healing session, we can explore where old patterns like the victim mindset may be rooted and begin clearing them with compassion. We’ll tune into your energy body, especially the crown chakra, to identify any blocks that may be clouding your connection to the divine. This is sacred work that invites clarity, trust, and soul-level perspective.

Together, we create space for divine guidance to come through—so you can move forward feeling spiritually supported, emotionally grounded, and aligned with your higher path.

You are not being punished. You are being prepared. And you are never alone on your path. ✨ Let’s walk through it together.
